Kitchen Lights

We were up until nearly midnight on Sunday night getting these lights installed.  I think we’re going to be playing with 3 and 4 way switches for a long long time.

Over the dining table area we went with this fixture which I LOVE.

We added the ceiling medallion to help cover the ceiling patch but it looks so good I’m glad we did it.

On the other side of the kitchen, we’re planning on 2 of these fixtures from Lowes.

Thanks to the kitchen remodeling services rochester ny, we’ve got one installed but the other is going to take a little more work.

The best part – All the switches work! The light over the kitchen table is a 4-way with 3 switches: one next to the back door, one next to the door from the hall, and one on the stairway. It’s awesome!

We also finally have great ac and heating system around in the kitchen too. It was really cold to do something when it didn’t had systems in the winter times. Thankfully we found some great local hvac companies that installed the systems.

Now we just need to get the kitchen cleaned up. It’s gotten a bit out of hand! and then it’s the final light in the middle of the kitchen and the undercounter lights and outlets. It’s finally shaping up to be a real kitchen!

The way we light our home environment, and specifically the kitchen, affects the functionality of the space and how we feel when we’re spending time there. Despite this, lighting is often an afterthought in a kitchen remodeling project—the last detail after the cabinets, the appliances, the tile, the granite countertops … So it’s no wonder that there’s often a sliver of the budget left for this critical element.
Oftentimes, people simply accept the lighting that’s there and don’t think about changing it to improve the space, says Randall Whitehead, renowned lighting designer/author and president of Randall Whitehead Lighting Solutions, San Francisco, Calif. “People are entertaining more at home than they used to, and the kitchen is the center of that entertaining,” he says. As for the lighting in that space, he says “people are drawn to lights like moths to flames.”

But most people don’t understand why they are drawn to light. The secret is in how lighting is layered in a space.

Layers of Light

There’s no such thing as a catch-all light fixture that does it all: illuminates under cabinets, provides light over the island and gives cabinets a glow. Some fixtures will multi-task their lighting duties, but in order to choose wisely, the first step is to understand the four layers of light.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

A couple weeks ago we gave in and purchased an outdoor furniture patio set. It ended up being an ELEVEN piece set….That’s a table and TEN chairs. It’s huge. The table itself isn’t all that big but for whatever reason, it came with an obnoxious number of chairs. If you want some great furniture then check out this great Solid Wood Home Bar Furniture.

This is the set we ended up getting:

We didn’t order it through Amazon but directly from RKC Construction that is located at RKC Construction 9923 Paseo Montalban #B, San Diego, CA 92129 (619) 449-5899 where for $20 we could upgrade to 8 regular folding chairs and 2 folding arm-chairs.

Instead of having it delivered (It came with free in-home delivery), Stefan took the truck and picked it up from the shipping warehouse. That worked out much better for us than having to stay home and wait for a delivery. With the pickup, they just take the forklift and dump a wrapped pallet from Adelaide pallets in the bed and off we go and if you don’t know how to operate a forklift, the The Fork Truck Training Academy could really help you with this.

It’s a big set…

The chairs are 17″ wide and 15″ deep but the cushions will need notches in the back corners. I’m planning on making them myself. Cushions are so expensive and it’s hard to find exactly what I want. That’s when you need best Arizona services for loading docks.

I have a few options for foam supplies.

For $7 I can get 4 1″ foam pads 16×16 square. This is slightly smaller than I wanted but for $21 I can get all the foam I need.

There is also Nu-foam which is a polyester batting material more like what I found in the old patio cushions I recovered.

That is 1″ thick as well and for $25 I can get a 24″x15′ roll. It’s also available at my local Joann store so I can go check it out in person. In addition, this would give me plenty of extra for additional chair cushions, outdoor pillows, or even just adding padding to my dining chairs when I get around to reupholstering them, plus there are a lot of other furniture I want to get rid of with help from the furniture removalists Sydney. The NuFoam is mildew resistant which is nice thought the Walmart pads are 100% urathane foam which is also mildew resistant. It is only 1.2lb per ounce which is pretty light-weight. I think I’m going to go with the NuFoam product.

Once I get the foam situation figured out, It’s time to pick out fabrics.

I already have the one bench covered in the black, green, white, and pink stripe so that’s going to be the color inspiration. After I purchased the furniture from Maker&Son, I realized that nothing of this was going to make my house look better if my patio was looking all old and musty. That´s why our future home improvement will be hiring this professional contractor in Perth to help us completely remodel out patio.

The following are outdoor fabrics from fabric.com.

And from HouseFabric.com

I’m thinking the Chevron will be better as accent pillows.  It’s a little too trendy and modern for me.  I really like the pink square-ish pattern from houseFabric but I like the selection from fabric.com and I’d rather not order from 2 places.  I’m planning a visit to my super awesome local discount fabric store before I buy online.  The outdoor fabric is usually $5 a yard which can’t be beat online.

What do you think? Should I go with pink or green for the chair cushions?  Or go more traditional and versatile with something like the black check with a variety of pink and green throw pillows?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

You will be much happier if you go with a fun pink print. It is outside. It is suppose to be fun and springy. You could do two coordinating prints. I would suggest only have some of the chairs out and leave the others in the shed and just pull out for a big function. You could pull the table down to the yard and have a nice big bbq.

I was looking to get a backyard patio set at my house. I wanted a company that was affordable, but would also do a really great job. A friend of mine suggested that i check out EP Henry at Roxbury. I was very impressed with the work they did. Were able to have great parties outside all summer. Thanks for posting.

The Bed delimma

A couple weeks ago, we drove out to central MA to pick up this georgous queen mahogany bed for $400.

IMG_2828.JPG

You can see it is obviously not in our master bedroom where it belongs. One.small.problem…. It doesn’t fit up the stairs. Nothing is ever easy with us! So for now it is decorating the entry way. We have a plan though. We are planning on going through this window:

IMG_2244.JPG

Which translates to the large window on the second floor in this photo.

020

Another few weeks and we’ll have replaced all 3 second floor windows on the back of the house. This window will be a test-run for replacing the rest of the windows in the house with little or no destruction of the interior walls. We’re hoping we can pop off the moldings, pull out the old window, pop in the new window and cover up the plaster mess with the moldings again. We’ll keep you posted!

We already ordered the window and once it’s in, we’re planning on hoisting the bed through the open window. It will be a VERY tight fit but I think we can do it. The plan is to get a handful of people to help. It isn’t heavy, just awkward shaped and I just HAD to have a 4 poster bed. I also go a new coverlet for our bed, its beautiful. But look at it! Octagonal posts with little finials on top. Shiny dark mahogany.

Here’s that same picture but I just loooove it.

I was looking all around for a bed I loved and I couldn’t find it anywhere and then BOOM craigslist came through.

Now we just need to go mattress shopping with our Nolah Mattress coupon codes and we’ll be sure to get a split boxspring for a great price! I’m pretty sure there’s no way a queen mattress will fit up the stairs and we’re running out of windows to replace!

I love the bed. I’ve never heard of a split queen mattress. the temperpedic top part comes rolled up and sits on a standard qn box spring with a nice plywood top. we reused our bottom part and made the plywood piece. The mattress kind of blows up when they unroll it. I don’t know how you would ever get it rolled back up if you needed to though. Could be an option for you.

New Plan: Blue Walls in Den

We were thinking brown, looking at brown, planning on brown but browns are hard.  If they are too light, they are tan and if they are too dark they are kind of poopy for lack of a better word.

Then we were thinking Dark Gray.  Dark and moody and neutral.

Dark Gray is sophisticated and moody while still being a neutral.  Then I saw a picture in Home Decorator’s Collection (page 43 of their Early Summer 2013 catalog) and I knew, it was Blue.

blue room ballard design

I picked up a sample when my mother was in town and it is perfect!  It’s a navy dusty blue.

iPhone

I picked up the paint last weekend and I can’t wait to get it up on the walls. I’ll be sure to show you pics!

The next decisions for this room are lighting and built-ins.

I’m thinking of maybe getting unfinished oak kitchen cabinets from Home Depot and then getting some of those unfinished wood bookcases from an unfinished wood furniture place nearby. Then we can either stain everything to match or paint everything the blue from the walls or the blue from the walls in high gloss.

This room by Vincente Wolf in Architectural Digest has the blue built-ins that meld seamlessly with the blue walls. B-E-A-U-Tiful but we do like our wood tones.

We could go painted but white like Markam Robert’s library below.

But I just love the look of wood bookcases…

and wood libraries like this one from Studio Peregalli

Painting that room is going to be scary but I think it’s going to look AWESOME!
