Craigslist Guy part 2
You saw my first round of loot from the craigslist guy here but I haven’t had a chance to share round 2.
The best purchase of the day, at $75 was….
A printer block cabinet with 20 drawers.
B-E-A-Utiful. I love it.
We also got this Morris Chair which is basically an old fashioned recliner. I have the back cushion as well but it’s in the shed. It needs to be recovered something awful and that old horsehair upholstery gets a bit buggy. I’m planning on using some bug bombs in the house soon and I’ll pull it in when I finally get around to that.
The chair is missing the bar that holds the seat up but I found a guy online that will make a replacement bar in brass for $60 cut to length so we’ll get ordered soon and we’ll be good to go.
The guy is at www.scarboroughmarshfurniture.com if you’re looking for Morris chair parts. I haven’t ordered yet so I can’t give a review but I will once I’ve got some experience.
The Craigslist guy was a big lamp collector. He had a ton of brass lamps..no really, I think there may have been more than 2000 lbs of brass lamps in his house and barn. Maybe that’s an overstatement but it really was incredible.
I showed you the pictures from round 1.
Round 2 we picked up this 2 light ceiling fixture that Stefan regretted not getting the first time.
We also got another table lamp and a handful of brass pendant mounts.
And these cool gas conversion outdoor lanterns. They’ve already been electrified but they need new wiring which should be easy to replace.
And since we got so many lights, we got a bunch of glass shades to go with them.
All in all a good trip. Our friend who introduced us to Craigslist guy also went back and got more stuff. Some map drawers and other misc. items. I’m glad we found this guy. Lamps that we like are so hard to come by. Now we just need to get to polishing and re-wiring…always a project!

The Bed delimma
A couple weeks ago, we drove out to central MA to pick up this georgous queen mahogany bed for $400.
You can see it is obviously not in our master bedroom where it belongs. One.small.problem…. It doesn’t fit up the stairs. Nothing is ever easy with us! So for now it is decorating the entry way. We have a plan though. We are planning on going through this window:
Which translates to the large window on the second floor in this photo.
Another few weeks and we’ll have replaced all 3 second floor windows on the back of the house. This window will be a test-run for replacing the rest of the windows in the house with little or no destruction of the interior walls. We’re hoping we can pop off the moldings, pull out the old window, pop in the new window and cover up the plaster mess with the moldings again. We’ll keep you posted!
We already ordered the window and once it’s in, we’re planning on hoisting the bed through the open window. It will be a VERY tight fit but I think we can do it. The plan is to get a handful of people to help. It isn’t heavy, just awkward shaped and I just HAD to have a 4 poster bed. I also go a new coverlet for our bed, its beautiful. But look at it! Octagonal posts with little finials on top. Shiny dark mahogany.
Here’s that same picture but I just loooove it.
I was looking all around for a bed I loved and I couldn’t find it anywhere and then BOOM craigslist came through.
Now we just need to go mattress shopping with our Nolah Mattress coupon codes and we’ll be sure to get a split boxspring for a great price! I’m pretty sure there’s no way a queen mattress will fit up the stairs and we’re running out of windows to replace!

I love the bed. I’ve never heard of a split queen mattress. the temperpedic top part comes rolled up and sits on a standard qn box spring with a nice plywood top. we reused our bottom part and made the plywood piece. The mattress kind of blows up when they unroll it. I don’t know how you would ever get it rolled back up if you needed to though. Could be an option for you.

Fun Finds – Craigslist Guy edition
A friend of ours was scouring craigslist for a library card catalog when he stumbled upon a listing with no picture but what sounded like a great piece. He went out to take a look and it was awesome. Not only that, but the guy was an older man, a collector, and he was moving. He was selling almost everything in the house and adjacent barn. Our friend John knew it was right up our alley and the three of us went back to pick up the card catalog and pick through the treasures in this guys house.
We came back with the motherload.
This is one cool piece.
It’s some sort of gas auto lantern. Either for a car or a stagecoach of some sort. Think a gas headlight. Soooo cool!
An ammo box and a library ladder chair
And this neat misson-style or mission-ish-style umbrella stand
And to top it all off, we got this big box full of lamps and obscure gas to electric conversion pieces that we would never be able to find otherwise.
I’ll be posting more details as I get things cleaned up and re-wired but I couldn’t help but share my find with you now while they are making a big mess in my kitchen.
What a great way to spend a Sunday!

Estate Sale Finds
Last weekend we swung by a George Estate Sale. Â It was in Chelmsford which is a little bit of a ways but it was a great sale. Â I wish we had gotten there earlier.
I had to wrestle with some ladies upstairs for vintage Christmas ornaments but I managed one pack:
And a great little purse:
I also got 2 great baskets. Â One picnic basket and one laundry basket.
I’ve been looking for a picnic basket so I can make this cute end table:
And I bought books! I have a serious love of etiquette books. I have a large collection and I hit the etiquette book jackpot at this sale.
I even got this awesome small book on men’s etiquette.
You can still buy it on Amazon.
The copyright date is 1897 but I’m pretty sure that it’s not a first edition. It’s in too good of shape though I suppose it is possible. I need to do some more research to accurately date it.
It’s also free on Project Guttenburg  Here.  If you’ve never heard of Project Guttenburg, I recommend you check it out.  It’s how I read most of my favorite books.  It’s books that are out of copyright available online.  It’s a great resource.
I also got this great little book from GE.
There’s also a memo inside from the president saying that this book was for all of the employees. It’s very cute. I’m thinking it needs to be framed ASAP. I love it.
If that wasn’t enough junk, I also got a handful of national geographic magazines from the 30s and 40s for the back cover ads. Some great coke ads. I figure I’ll cut out all the ads and toss the rest. Those books are a dime a dozen.
This one’s my favorite but thee christmas ones will be cute framed for Christmas.
There were also a bunch of national geographic maps. Only a few really cool ones but I figure I’ll photograph and add them to the sell on etsy pile. I’d really like to get back into that especially for “envelope” items that are easy to pack and mail. Â I’ve got a neat 40s era southwestern US, a neat greater NYC region, a beautiful DC Metro one and a really cool UK one. Â Let me know if you’re interested. Â I can send more pics!
It was a fun sale. George is the best. I try to go to all his sales. We’re buddies. In fact, just the other day we were walking to get dinner in Arlington Center when we hear a “HEY” as George makes a right hand turn. He must have been in the area and recognized us on the street. You may think, well yeah, he probably doesn’t have many regulars but let me tell you, that’s not the case at all. Everyone who’s anyone in the re-sale estate sale community north of Boston raves about George. Except maybe black haired lady who is a competing estate sale lady but she’s mean.
Here’s his website: georgecoestatesales.com. If you’re in the greater Boston area and looking for someone to do an estate sale, you can’t do better than George. He’s honest to a fault and the sales are a family endeavor with both his wife and daughter working the registers. He even hires his teenage daughter’s friends to help be car loaders and general security. Definitely the kind of operation I’d support and not just cause I want to buy your cool stuff 🙂
P.S. Â George, I want you to get the estate sale for this house:50 Wendell Rd, Newton MA
Awesome!
