Craigslist Guy part 2

You saw my first round of loot from the craigslist guy here but I haven’t had a chance to share round 2.

The best purchase of the day, at $75 was….

IMG_2831.JPG

A printer block cabinet with 20 drawers.

IMG_2833.JPG

B-E-A-Utiful. I love it.

We also got this Morris Chair which is basically an old fashioned recliner. I have the back cushion as well but it’s in the shed. It needs to be recovered something awful and that old horsehair upholstery gets a bit buggy. I’m planning on using some bug bombs in the house soon and I’ll pull it in when I finally get around to that.

IMG_2846.JPG

The chair is missing the bar that holds the seat up but I found a guy online that will make a replacement bar in brass for $60 cut to length so we’ll get ordered soon and we’ll be good to go.

The guy is at www.scarboroughmarshfurniture.com if you’re looking for Morris chair parts. I haven’t ordered yet so I can’t give a review but I will once I’ve got some experience.

The Craigslist guy was a big lamp collector. He had a ton of brass lamps..no really, I think there may have been more than 2000 lbs of brass lamps in his house and barn. Maybe that’s an overstatement but it really was incredible.

I showed you the pictures from round 1.

Round 2 we picked up this 2 light ceiling fixture that Stefan regretted not getting the first time.
IMG_2834.JPG

We also got another table lamp and a handful of brass pendant mounts.

IMG_2835.JPG

And these cool gas conversion outdoor lanterns. They’ve already been electrified but they need new wiring which should be easy to replace.

IMG_2836.JPG

And since we got so many lights, we got a bunch of glass shades to go with them.

IMG_2837.JPG

All in all a good trip. Our friend who introduced us to Craigslist guy also went back and got more stuff. Some map drawers and other misc. items. I’m glad we found this guy. Lamps that we like are so hard to come by. Now we just need to get to polishing and re-wiring…always a project!

Since you asked, I’m going to post a comment to test out my supposed fix

The Bed delimma

A couple weeks ago, we drove out to central MA to pick up this georgous queen mahogany bed for $400.

IMG_2828.JPG

You can see it is obviously not in our master bedroom where it belongs. One.small.problem…. It doesn’t fit up the stairs. Nothing is ever easy with us! So for now it is decorating the entry way. We have a plan though. We are planning on going through this window:

IMG_2244.JPG

Which translates to the large window on the second floor in this photo.

020

Another few weeks and we’ll have replaced all 3 second floor windows on the back of the house. This window will be a test-run for replacing the rest of the windows in the house with little or no destruction of the interior walls. We’re hoping we can pop off the moldings, pull out the old window, pop in the new window and cover up the plaster mess with the moldings again. We’ll keep you posted!

We already ordered the window and once it’s in, we’re planning on hoisting the bed through the open window. It will be a VERY tight fit but I think we can do it. The plan is to get a handful of people to help. It isn’t heavy, just awkward shaped and I just HAD to have a 4 poster bed. I also go a new coverlet for our bed, its beautiful. But look at it! Octagonal posts with little finials on top. Shiny dark mahogany.

Here’s that same picture but I just loooove it.

I was looking all around for a bed I loved and I couldn’t find it anywhere and then BOOM craigslist came through.

Now we just need to go mattress shopping with our Nolah Mattress coupon codes and we’ll be sure to get a split boxspring for a great price! I’m pretty sure there’s no way a queen mattress will fit up the stairs and we’re running out of windows to replace!

I love the bed. I’ve never heard of a split queen mattress. the temperpedic top part comes rolled up and sits on a standard qn box spring with a nice plywood top. we reused our bottom part and made the plywood piece. The mattress kind of blows up when they unroll it. I don’t know how you would ever get it rolled back up if you needed to though. Could be an option for you.

Fun Finds – Craigslist Guy edition

A friend of ours was scouring craigslist for a library card catalog when he stumbled upon a listing with no picture but what sounded like a great piece. He went out to take a look and it was awesome. Not only that, but the guy was an older man, a collector, and he was moving. He was selling almost everything in the house and adjacent barn. Our friend John knew it was right up our alley and the three of us went back to pick up the card catalog and pick through the treasures in this guys house.

We came back with the motherload.

This is one cool piece.

Any guesses what it is?
IMG_2819.JPG

It’s some sort of gas auto lantern. Either for a car or a stagecoach of some sort. Think a gas headlight. Soooo cool!

We got 2 cool chandeliers:

2 really neat old floor lamps
IMG_2814.JPG

An ammo box and a library ladder chair
IMG_2811.JPG

And this neat misson-style or mission-ish-style umbrella stand
IMG_2810.JPG

And to top it all off, we got this big box full of lamps and obscure gas to electric conversion pieces that we would never be able to find otherwise.

IMG_2808.JPG

I’ll be posting more details as I get things cleaned up and re-wired but I couldn’t help but share my find with you now while they are making a big mess in my kitchen.

What a great way to spend a Sunday!

New England Demolition & Salvage and other New Bedford highlights

This past week I started a new job.  It’s been going great and it’s super exciting to get to meet new people and learn new things.  As I mentioned, I took a week off between jobs to relax, catch up on house stuff, and have some fun.  On Thursday of that week, we went somewhere awesome: New Bedford. It is a sea-coast town about an hour and a half south of us.

New England Demolition and Salvage had all manner of cool things. They are definitely one of the best companies for demolition. Like 100s of bathtubs

Or toilets of every variety.

Including a PURPLE one!

And this awesome pink kitchen sink.

Unfortunately we were on the hunt for a pair of pedestal sinks but no luck in that department. They looked pretty cleaned out and it’s actually cheaper to buy new.

We also hit 1 of 5 or so big antique malls in the area. I’ll definitely be going back to scope out the rest of the malls!

This was just the “furniture” neighborhood. It was this big…times about 5. HUGE.

We came across this Eastlake Furniture set that we really liked. We decided we didn’t have the time to take on the project but we will keep our eyes peeled for a similar set in better condition. I don’t mind re-upholstery but the house is not in a state where I can take on that project right now. Stefan loved the style though and the diminutive size will be perfect in the piano room. This particular style was popular from the 1870s to 1890s and was named for it’s creator, Charles Eastlake. Though victorian by timeframe, the style is a deviation from the gaudy baroque revival of the time. After looking at the pieces in the furniture store, we were able see the Eastlake influence in some of the architectural details of the house. It is clearly a turning point from the romantic curves and classic influences of the late 19th century to the angular art-deco designs of the post-war 1920s. I’d love to find a good book on the history of furniture design. It’s fascinating to see the progression of design as circumstances change over time. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

After Thursday in New Bedford, we left Friday for a weekend in Saratoga Springs. It was a great trip and lots of fun family time. I had fun with my nieces and nephews swimming and coloring birdhouses. To top it off, I came home with the great cloche. Just the right size:

Stay tuned for the saga of the kitchen cabinets!
